The garden of De Vagebond can be described as a formal country garden. The proprietors, Jeff Pelckmans and Monique Quirynen, are both landscapers by profession, and they have designed the garden around a geometric theme of blocks and small lanes that typifies the area of Merksplas Colony.
Formal structures and soft planting are combined in this pretty Flemish garden. Indigenous trees, shrubs, and colourful wild flowers provide a warm and delightful contrast to well groomed hedges and formal flower beds. During the summer, terraces with Mediterranean pot plants and fishponds provide an exotic and heartwarming touch touch to the country-style planting.
The garden is still fairly young. The first hedges and trees were planted in 2004. In the years following, the garden was gradually given more form. The whole process will last for some time; after all, when is a garden ever finished?
The garden includes an orchard with fruits of the region. Jeff and Monique will gladly let you have a taste of their home-grown apples, rhubarb, nuts, and grapes.
There is also a paddock with a couple of donkeys that love to attract everyone's attention!
